Due to technical problems with my computer, the July newsletter was released as a pdf, so if you are not on our mailing list, you will have missed this. Everything is up and running again now, so here is the August issue - the first of volume 2, as the first issue of XJ News was sent out in August last year as an experiment and in response to people continually asking me to recommend specialists, or find them a Jaguar! Due to the technical hiccup, some of the content of this newsletter is repeated from the pdf, for those who missed it. My apologies to those who have seen and read it.

The long awaited new XJ (X351) has now been revealed, so there is now a page for this on the website! This month, I have featured Esta-janes journey to Jaguar and her apprenticeship, in response to the many requests I have had for this! We also have details of our newest register "The International Jaguar Supercar Register" so read on!

I have been searching U-tube for interesting Jaguar video's, and felt that I must share the one below, so if you haven't already seen it, and it doesnt send shivers down your spine and make you cry..............

X-type Production

Production of the "baby" Jaguar is due to cease at the end of 2009 - so if you fancy a NEW X-type, grab a bargain while you still can. Last of the line cars are always the most sought after in years to come, and are always sent out with lots of extra goodies to encourage potential buyers to use up the stocks. Once production ends, there will no longer be a Jaguar estate car in the line-up. The X-type is also the only Jaguar to feature 4 wheel drive. Perhaps not always a favourite with purists, to its credit, it pioneered both the estate body and 4 wheel drive for Jaguar, and is the ONLY factory-built Jaguar ever to have featured either of these as a production car !!!

The International Jaguar Supercar Register

Jaguar Supercar Register logo

We are proud to announce the formation of our latest register which will include details and information on all Jaguar Supercars. This currently comprises the XJ220 and XJR-15. Work is already well under way, and as with the XKR Silverstone Register, we have already uncovered many a myth regarding XJ220 and XJR-15 production!

We also have a number of items of very rare XJ220 and XJR-15 memorabilia and spare parts for sale. Details below.

  Ref. 68

XJ220 REAR QUARTER LIGHT WINDOW
Taken from one of the XJ220 race car versions sent to America by TWR, to feature in the one make XJ220 Fast Masters Championship race series at Indianapolis in 1993. Amongst a long list of the many famous world class drivers was film star racing driver and team owner Paul Newman. Displaying the Indianapolis Raceway sticker along with one from the United States Auto Club, this rare piece of motor racing memorabilia looks great on the wall in any office or den.
SOLD

  Ref. 69

JAGUAR XJ220 WHEEL NUT
This comes with a rare hub centre badge assembly and is offered with an extremely rare XJ220 tax disk holder. The latter being the only place on the car in which the Jaguar XJ220 name appears in full. Ordinarily the wheel centre badge insert fits into the hollow end of the front stub axle, separate from the wheel nut itself. In order for it to be presented as a complete collectable assembly, a special machined aluminium replica hub end piece has been made specially so that these pieces can be fitted together as a unit.
SOLD

  Ref. 70

UNUSED BONNET MASCOT
As fitted on Jaguar Mark 7 saloon cars. This is being offered along with a very rare used first model mascot with a shorter stem. The latter is the only known example of this very rare mascot, and it is not a cut down version of the ordinary longer mascot. Both come complete with chrome and enamel black Jaguar badge inserts.
SOLD

  Ref. 71

NEW UN-USED XJ220 CAM COVER IN MINT CONDITION
Made in special aluminium alloy this, like all XJ220 components, was an extremely expensive piece to purchase. Originally only bona fide XJ220 owners were allowed to buy such things from TWR or the Jaguar factory. It looks great fixed to the wall in your office.
SOLD

  Ref. 72

TWO EXTREMELY RARE TWR JAGUAR XJR RACING GEAR LEVERS
The top one was made for cars like the fabulous TWR XJR-6, XJR-8, XJR-9 and XJR-12 series of prototype cars which took part in Group C and GTP races from 1985 to 1993, including Le Mans, Daytona, and many other important race venues around the world.

The lower gear lever is the one specially made and fitted in the Prototype R9R development car, forerunner of the superb Jaguar XJR-15’s.
SOLD

  Ref. 73

EXTREMELY RARE PROTOTYPE XJ220 CAM COVER
This was made for pre-production XJ220’s. Note: unlike the production XJ220’s, this one shows only 220 in the casting. Only a very small number of these interesting and historic covers were made.
SOLD

  Ref. 74

MUCH MORE RARE THAN THE XJ220 CAM COVERS!
This un-machined cam cover was made by Cosworth for their 3.5 litre engine fitted in the 1991 World Championship winning XJR-14 racers. As only three XJR-14’s were built, it is one of only a small handful ever made with the Jaguar name cast into the top.
SOLD

  Ref. 75

CROWN WHEEL & PINION USED IN XJR-14 GEARBOXES
The price for these from TWR was at the time of racing 00 (confirmed). It is a very rare collectable and interesting as being from the last model in the series of TWR Jaguar Prototypes.
SOLD

Diary of an XJ40 - Part 6

KUH goes to Thoresby Hall

by Esta-jane Mace

These last two months have been pretty busy for both KUH and I. Apart from general maintenance, and some nasty surprises (to be detailed in September’s issue) KUH has been going up and down the country attending Jaguar events come rain or shine! And talking about rain, the first event KUH attended at the beginning of June was the JEC’s 25th Anniversary.

Thoresby Hall: JEC 25th Anniversary
Thoresby Hall is a nice hour and a half long drive north up the M1 near Nottingham, currently mostly at 50mph due to road works, but this did wonders for KUH’s fuel economy! I was invited to help out with the arrival of the XJ-SC’s, so I arrived bright and early and parked on the field, conveniently next to the Auto Boutique van, where KUH was kindly taken under the wing of Tony from Auto Boutique who proceeded to use her as a product demonstration car - much to KUHs delight no doubt, being pampered with quality products all day! The morning was generally taken up with organising the XJ-SC’s as they turned up and keeping Tony topped up with hot coffees. After the Concours judging had taken place, we set up a very Jaguar orientated Tombola. This was pretty successful, especially after lunch when the heavens just opened and we were able to coax people in under our fairly dry marquee but only if they bought our tickets! It was also nice for me to finally meet several members of the XJ40 forum who had come from miles away to be there! However sadly, the rain didn’t cease, in fact, I am pretty sure it got heavier, and by 4 o’clock we all decided enough was enough and we packed up to go home. I must add a very well done to all those brave Cabriolet owners (And other convertibles who turned up on the day) who actually stayed longer through the rain than many of the hard top vehicles did! Also, a very well done to Tara Meenaghan who won Best Ladies Cabriolet, and Paul Weston who won Best Non Concours Cabriolet.

Newby Hall: JEC Northern Day
Newby Hall, the location for the JEC Northern Day, is situated near Ripon, and another hour further away than Thoresby was, but every minute is thoroughly enjoyable in such a comfortable Jaguar! I parked up upon arrival, after allowing a hedgehog to wander across the road in front of me, which was carefully and neatly dodged by the Mark 2 in front of KUH. I went on a stroll around the event. It was hard to say whether this was bigger than Thoresby or not, as due to the rain I was unable to investigate, but there were still lots of stunning Jaguars in attendance, and it was just as exciting walking around the car park as it was the actual main event! I was slightly disappointed with the lack of second-hand Jaguar spares (maybe I was too spoilt at Stoneleigh!) but SNG Barrett were there with new parts, and Rob Jenner was able to supply me with the long awaited driver’s side window motor! The weather at this event, although in British tradition, very grey with occasional showers, was a lot drier and warmer than the Thoresby storms! Meguiars' was also at this event representing the cleaning side of things, and I must recommend to all the avid Jaguar cleaners out there to try this if you haven’t already! I am certainly not saying you should only buy the Meguiars, there are other manufacturers out there of course, it is just that I have only seen the Meguiars kit in action, so my experience of clay, and what I am about to tell you, is based around this particular brand. Armed with this kit, I showed the Meguiars seller my car. Now, KUH had been cleaned and polished the day before, but the weather had been miserable over night, and all morning on the way up she was constantly being showered in road spray from passing cars. Added to this is the bonnet: This was found in my local scrap yard, and during my ownership, no matter how I cleaned or polished it, it always felt gritty and not half as smooth in comparison with the wings! Five minutes with a clay bar however and the area of my bonnet which it was tested on was as smooth as the wings and you should have seen the dirt this piece of clay had picked up - stuff which my wash mop and polishing cloths just couldn’t pick up! I was then advised that this only needs to be done once a year, AND it makes washing the car much easier over the year as you are not fighting the ground in road dirt! I was very impressed, so if you can, get yourselves to a Meguiars shop and ask them to demonstrate it! Anyway, I digress...unlike Thoresby, the winners of the Concours and Pride and Joy could be announced on the same day, and they also made formal presentations to those winners from Thoresby as well.

Midlands Day: JDC & JEC
Midlands’s day took place at Bosworth Battle Field near Nuneaton Sunday 19th July. On my way to the event I was lucky enough to find myself following the majority of the way, F*** UDU, a dark red XJ40 XJR, who I am lead to believe has been in several Jaguar articles. Sadly we were separated at the field as he took pride of place on the JDC stand. Midlands’s day was an event hosted by both JEC and JDC, supported by David Manners and Sturgess of Leicester, who had bought along many gorgeous pre-owned but pretty new Jaguars, as well as the world famous Rocket sport XFR! I was unable to stay to the end of this event sadly as KUH had a few niggling problems that I really needed to fix, but before leaving I took a good look around at some of the wonderful Jaguars that had also turned up, including the 2 lovely XJ40s that parked either side of KUH. It was also nice to meet Peter and one of his team mates from Sweden who are both competing in a cheap Jaguar only “racetween here and Sweden in their recently purchased XJS! It also turns out that this keen enthusiast has 4 other Jaguars waiting for him at his home!!

Silverstone Classic: Featured Marque - Jaguar!
This 3-day event is not just Jaguars, but a general “classicr show, however this year, Jaguar was the featured marque! I was lucky enough to get a special parking ticket that got me in to the Jaguar Parking Only zone, where I left KUH happily between an X250 and an X200, before being whisked away in a courtesy XF to the Jaguar Zone within the event. It was quite a turn out, with the new model line up on the Jaguar stand, including the new XJ! There were also all the racing cars ranging from XK120s to an XJR-15 and clubs including the JEC, JDC, E-Type Club, XK Club and many more! Along with these, in the Bonham’s Marquee, were also some of the JDHT cars, sadly being auctioned off to help raise more money for the more “special" rare cars. I was unable to attend the auction, but it was probably just as well, I would have loved to have taken them all home - but somehow I don’t think my bank manager would have been very impressed...But on a happier note, they all fetched way beyond their estimates, and the money is all going to good use! I had the opportunity to get all over the event, visit the pits, including the XK racing pits, watching the old racing cars being chased by the XFR Fire Car, and also got to watch the impressive aerobatic display. It was an immense day with something for everyone, and it was all that more special having Jaguar as the featured marque!

You can find lots of photos from all these events in my gallery-you may even spot your Jaguar there! Don’t forget to watch for upcoming events in my “eventsction and you can email me too if there is an event I haven’t added yet.

For more details on any of the above, please visit www.project-jaguar.co.uk Esta’s own site which contains full details of KUH’s Diary

Esta-jane's Journey to Jaguar

Esta-jane's Journey to Jaguar

..........and embarrassing moments along the way!

Sir William Lyons sadly passed away on the 8th of February 1985………….unfortunately, this also happened to be my 24th birthday! Then two years later, to the day, my first child was born!
Being a confirmed petrol-head, I wanted to call her "Mercedes" but her father refused to allow it, so I settled for Esta-jane Letitia! With hindsight, this was probably a blessing!

I think I can honestly say that neither Esta-jane, nor her younger brother and sister, ever had cars actually forced upon them was more a case of being raised within a family where automotive considerations always took priority! As in my own case, I don’t know what it is which actually triggers a love of cars, not shared by the majority of other females, yet taken for granted among men!

  Ford Escort

Esta-jane’s very first car Escort! She used to take it everywhere with her and typically, for a Ford, by the time she was 2 years old, the doors had dropped off!
Note the piece of string for towing the Escort along behind her, and the cute “careakers she is wearing ught from good olollies!
When Esta was first born, I wanted her to be as interested in my 2 hobbies (cars and horses) as I was. First photo’s are with a pony and 2 Triumph TR’s! The Triumph’s soon made way for a Land Rover after the horrific gales of 1987, when Esta-jane was a few months old combination of submitting to the fact that if more children followed I would need a bigger car and a Land Rover is relatively indestructible !

  reading Land Rover mag

Not yet out of nappies, and already she has her head in a parts catalogue
...........and it was obviously gripping stuff!
...........but whats this on the front?
A Land Rover, Esta?
Esta had an equal dose of ponies and cars, as there were always plenty of both around when she was born, and for her second birthday she received an electric powered model Land Rover t the usual pedal car! Esta handled it very well, and derived much pleasure from it. Esta showed a love of mechanical things in general from a very early age, and where other toddlers will copy their mother with a baby by wrapping a doll in a blanket and nursing it, Esta would wrap a toy tractor in a blanket and nurse that!

  Maylandsea Essex

Esta-jane’s first “driveabler electric powered “Land Rovercolour and registration number chosen to match Mummy’s real one! (oops!)
  Range Rover

Esta-jane’s first journey to school, in another car from the JLR stable! At least we had off-roaders for practical purposes, and before they became fashion accessories!
  Crewkerne Carnival Princess

In 1996, as one of Crewkerne’s Carnival Princesses, Esta-jane (rhs) was one of the first to experience the new Ford Probe convertible - obviously enjoying herself too much to notice that it wasn't the new XK8 convertible!
When she was 10, Esta won a scholarship to Hazlegrove Preparatory School, near Yeovil in Somerset, and was a boarder until leaving at the age of 13. She was unable to progress to Kings School as a suitable scholarship was not forth-coming.

  Court Barton Garage

When we lived in Crewkerne, Esta-jane spent much time with our neighbour’s children at Court Barton Garage, next door e fact that Martin Bolton was a Jaguar Specialist, could have sown the seeds for her passion for Jaguars!
By the time Esta was in her teens, we had moved on from off-roaders, as they had became mere fashion accessories! We were looking for a sensible family estate, and came across a bright red XJ6......we just had to have it! (and that's another story, which will follow in due course!) I think it changed everyones lives - for me personally it filled the void left by my growing children who no longer needed my constant attention, and my former passion for cars returned, and it obviously fired Esta's enthusiasm!

Although Esta had participated in riding activities over the years, she never really showed any interest in equitation as a career, and when finally leaving school she went to Duchy College and gained an HND in child-care. From this she learnt that child-care was not for her, and returned to East Devon College to take 5 design related A levels. During her first year, she applied to Jaguar Cars for an engineering apprenticeship and after attending several rigorous selection tests and interviews she was invited to join the company in September 2006.

Despite today’s awareness of sexual equality, an engineering apprenticeship is still very definitely male dominated. We understand that 4000 applications are received every year (mainly from young men) and out of those only 40 will be successful. Added to this, out of the 40 only 1 apprentice per year is then selected to join Jaguar’s Design team, and in 2006 it was Esta-jane!

Esta-jane aspires to one day take the place of celebrated Design Director Ian Callum, creator of the award winning Jaguar XK and radical new XF and XJ.

As we waited with baited breath to hear the results of the Apprentice of the Year, it seemed odd that only 3 years ago we were waiting in even more strained anticipation to see if Esta had even been selected by Jaguar for an apprenticeship. She did even better than that by being the only candidate that year to be selected to join the design department! If that was the icing on the cake, then the apprenticeship of the year award was the cherry on top!

There are many things going on in the design dept which Esta cannot speak of, but other things, such as the Virtual Reality Suite are now becoming more widely known, and which I take for granted as I hear of them as they happen. When the VRS was featured on Midland’s TV over a year ago, Esta happened to be working in it on the day they were filming and sent me a video clip! As an apprentice designer she gets to try out everything, and I think one of her favourites is clay modelling. In her short time with Jaguar she has already had many exciting experiences and has learnt such a lot. She says she never tires of arriving at work (Gaydon) and looking across to the test track to see a prototype being put through its paces. Everyone at Gaydon is an enthusiast, and when Esta arrived for work on her first day minutes early, she found she was the last one there and a colleague told her that if you arrive at Gaydon 10 minutes early, you are already late !!!

Esta’s involvement with the JDHT as a volunteer has provided her with yet more experience and entertainment. An extract from a letter to me, below, provides an insight into her activities and the pleasure she derived from them.

Sunday, 3rd September 2006

Hello there!

Helped out at JDHT - my first day! Awesome! Went out in an XK120 (NUB 120) and my first time in an E-Type was the very last one ever made. I got driven to the Coventry Motor Museum in an old Daimler Bus (1963). Then I did the Coventry Run in the last XJ40 Sovereign ever made! Francois Prins (the JDHT photographer and Heritage Archive Editor) drove and I navigated! Also got to sit in the new XKR - a bright yellow one!

Esta

Before being nominated for Apprentice of the Year she had already represented Jaguar at a conference promoting apprenticeships, and more recently, on June 7th she assisted at the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club 25th Anniversary celebrations at Thoresby Hall in Yorkshire, helping John Bleasdale (custodian of the International XJS Cabriolet Register) in organising the XJS Cabriolets.

Having now acquired her first Jaguar from a colleague, while still only 21, she is gaining not only knowledge of how blue printed, hand built prototypes work, but also what happens to their production counterparts after 20 years! She has been given permission to work on her early 1990 4 litre XJ40 Sovereign at Gaydon, but even though it is her own car, no photo’s are allowed! As anyone who regularly reads this newsletter will know, Esta not only has a regular feature here, documenting the progress of her XJ40 Sovereign, she also has created her own website www.projectjaguar.co.uk dedicated to her much loved XJ40 Sovereign.

Esta is looking forward to the time when she can put her own mark on the Jaguar marque, as a designer!

Esta-Jane has the drive for roaring success at Jaguar

Esta-Jane Mace is proving that engineering isn’t just for the boys by clinching a place in the regional finals of the Apprenticeships Awards 2009. Her achievement is recognition of the dedication and commitment she has shown since moving to Birmingham from Devon as a teenager two-and-a-half years ago.

Esta was over the moon when she originally found out that she’d been accepted on the Apprenticeship scheme at Jaguar Land Rover, the car manufacturer she had always wanted to work for. Despite the challenges of leaving friends and family behind to embark on her new career path, Esta-Jane has not looked back and continues to go from strength to strength at the iconic company.

She comments, ‘I embarked on the Apprenticeship as I wanted to be a car designer. Not only have I gained vehicle-related qualifications, I have a great opportunity to work for Jaguar Land Rover, a brand I have always admired.

Most of Esta-Jane’s work is carried out as part of a team, but she also has opportunities to embark on personal projects. She elaborates, ‘I’m currently looking at various options for alternative centre console designs. I plan to propose my ideas to the design team and hopefully one of them may be taken on board in the future. Esta-Jane was recently involved in the production of the LRX concept car, a project she is immensely proud of. She comments, ‘Seeing a new model unveiled is such an emotional and overwhelming experience and it’s so nice to know that I’ve been a part of it. As well as formal qualifications Apprenticeships can give you a great sense of pride in your work. Lloyd Neal, Apprentice Supervisor at JLR, explains why Apprentices are a key component in JLR’s workforce, ‘It’s fantastic to have young people coming into our organisation and for us to be able to train them, shape them and guide them in the Jaguar Land Rover way. The fact that they’re also getting recognised qualifications along the way makes the whole scheme really worthwhile. Esta-Jane practises her skills on her friends and family’s cars and also helps the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust in her spare time. This led to her being given her own Jaguar by a colleague on the understanding that she has to get it through an MOT. She says, ‘I love working on cars and being a massive Jaguar fan I love restoring their historical models. Being a female in a traditionally male dominated industry has provided Esta-Jane with additional opportunities and she has become proficient in talking to other young women about careers in engineering and additional opportunities in the automotive industry. Following a recent attendance at a careers fair it was noted that many of the girls showed an interest in engineering, but weren’t sure how to go about getting an Apprenticeship. Esta-Jane is a great advocate for girls thinking about entering the industry and proof that dreams can come true if you set your mind to it.

She has already been named Apprentice of the Year at Jaguar Land Rover and her success is set to continue as Lloyd Neal testifies, ‘Esta-Jane’s continuous drive and commitment throughout her Apprenticeship has been infectious to everyone around her. She has a great career ahead of her at Jaguar Land Rover and I feel that she fully deserves to be nominated for the Advanced Apprenticeship 2009 Award.p>If you would like to see the video which accompanies this case study, please contact Letitia@xclusively-jaguar.com
