Jaguar XJ-S Pre HE Manual 1975-1979

One new reader tells us about his special XJ-S. It is a 1975 V12 with factory 4 speed manual gearbox. These are quite rare, and this one is the second V12 manual to leave the factory and was a Jaguar Press car. It featured in many magazine road tests between 1976 and 1978 and was registered LDU 870P. It was built on 21 August 1975 with 3 other manuals. The first was also a press car and features in tests with registration number LDU867P. The third manual built on this first day also survives, is also red with black interior, and is also located in Australia.

A white manual built on the next day was the one featured in the TV series "The Saint" and it also survives today - still in the UK.

LDU 870P has had a bare metal respray some years ago and presents and drives immaculately. The new (6th) owner is keen to get it completely original. He has already replaced the clam shell exterior mirror with the original style, has bought a brand new original steering wheel which will soon replace the small sports type, and stickers and other tiny details are receiving attention. The original Philips RN712 radio cassette, an option on these early XJ-Ss, was fitted to this press car but had been replaced over the years. After 2 years of searching an original has been sourced and will soon be fitted. The seats, which only require a small amount of attention, will soon be refurbished, and the car will be 99.9%. A previous owner has spent a lot of money maintaining this one in top condition and it is fantastic to drive.

Lynx Eventer 1982-2002

Lynx created a total of 67 Eventer's from variously specified XJ-S's between 1982 and 2002.

Production can be broken down as follows:

52 pre-facelift 49 RHD
15 facelift 18 LHD

1 prototype that launched the car at the 14th August 1982 Open Day at Browns Lane
3(?) with 3.6 litre AJ6 (2 manual and 1 automatic)
2 or 3(?) XJR-S and 1 TWR
1 with 4.0 litre AJ6 (number 64)
The remaining Eventers are V12 HE (5.3 and 6.0)

Some very detailed accounts of the Eventer, how it was produced, and associated automobilia, can be found on this website by following the links below. New information to supplement our figures is always welcome.

Prototype Lynx Eventer

Ian Cooling's excellent article on the Lynx Eventer, which featured in the July 2011 issue of Xclusively Jaguar News, brought to light the very first Eventer of all. The prototype that launched the car at the 14th August 1982 Open Day at Browns Lane.

It was re-sprayed Ecurie Ecosse Blue by the purchaser, who still owns it! Stored in France for the last 10 years, it is now back in the UK, and the owner is looking for some help, or possibly a sponsor, to put it back into shape for a car rally to raise awareness of the important role of guide dogs and help with funding them.

Jaguar XJ40 (earliest surviving examples) 1987 Model Year

I am not sure that these actually qualify for a place in the Xclusively Jaguar Register, however, it would be rather nice to record at least one of the earliest surviving XJ40's, if only to encourage owners to submit pictures and details as I am in the process of trying to put together a guide for future restorers. This has been done with the Classic Jaguars, but not yet the XJ40 and it would be nice to make a start before it is too late and knowledge of the differences in the early examples is lost and forgotten.

This is going to be a longterm project, and I have already had some pictures submitted by Kamil Burczyk and Jon Murray. If you own an early XJ40 and wish to join in, please email XCLUSIVELY JAGUAR - all information gathered will be freely available to all, as a pdf guide, with credit given to those who have contributed information and pictures.

The earliest surviving XJ40 I am aware of is David Marks prototype, which has been mentioned before, and which I hope to feature properly in due course. Pictured below are the earliest surviving production XJ40's that I know of. Can you beat these VIN's?

The Insignia Models 1993-1994

XJ81 Daimler Double Six Insignia

Rob Jenner (JEC XJ Forum Co-ordinator) has been hard at work researching the Insignia cars created by Jaguar's "SVO" department (Special Vehicle Operations) during the early 1990's.

There were 376 Jaguar Insignia's: 319 XJ40/XJ81 and 57 XJS. Of the 319 XJ40/XJ81's, only 56 were rhd.

The example below is a Daimler Double Six swb rhd Insignia in Crystal Blue.

Crystal Blue was unique to the Insignia range, and only 8 XJ40/XJ81's were produced in this colour: 2 were UK spec rhd Daimler Double Six's, 2 were lhd 4 litre Sovereigns and 4 were rhd Daimler Double Six Majestic's for export to Japan.

Of the 2 above-mentioned UK spec rhd Daimler Double Six's in Crystal Blue, one had Silk White hide trim and the other (below) had Pale Mushroom hide trim, making each unique!

The example on the register has fortunately been well cared for all its life and has now reached that stage where it is likely to continue to be cherished and become a very sought after classic of the future! Thanks to its current owner, who lives in a neighbouring village, I have seen this Daimler and been made aware of its entire history and fascinating provenance. One of the charming features of the example shown below is stitched hide dash and door rolls, where normally there is moulded plastic! The documentation confirms that this one was supplied with Aero alloys, rather than the Insignia chrome wheels, as would have been expected!

Rob Jenner has previously written about the Insignia range in the Jaguar Enthusiast, and more information can be gained from him by request. He has informed me that not all Insignia's were given the full treatment – the service was to create a bespoke car, rather than a "fully-loaded" one!

Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign Gold 1994

The XJ40 Gold was based on a standard XJ6 and marketed as a special limited edition of approx 1500 XJ40's. Launched early in 1994, as a run out model for the XJ40, to boost the entry level range, and normally specified (as per the sales material) with a 3.2 engine, and trim levels akin to a normal XJ6. The Gold introduced the Kiwi alloy and some features are unique to this model.

More detailed information, and production numbers, can be found HERE

What is not mentioned in the sales material, is that some 350 other "GOLD's" were produced to a higher specification, and/or with other engine options. One of these was the 4 litre Sovereign Gold, as featured in this month's entry on the Xclusively Jaguar Register.

XJ12 SOVEREIGN LWB 1995-1997

As far as I am aware, the rarest of the lwb versions of the X300 is the XJ12 Sovereign - more rare than even the Daimler Century, with (I believe) a total of 56 produced worldwide! Although the X300 in 6.0 V12 form was available from 1994, only a few prototype lwb X300's were produced in 1994 so the V12 lwb was only available from 1995 to 1997 in Jaguar and Daimler guise.

The XJ12, XJ12 lwb and XJ12 Sovereign are all relatively rare - totals for each variant appear to be less than 1000, with the Daimler equivalents being slightly higher at just over 1000 of each .......but the XJ12 Sovereign lwb appears to have been produced in the lowest numbers of all.

With as many refinements as the Daimler Century, it makes an interesting alternative! John Downing is lucky enough to own one and feels that it is a worthy candidate for my new register, so it would be interesting to confirm numbers and see how many remain in the hands of collectors and enthusiasts willing to add their car to this list.

More information has recently come to light on this model, which has yet to be added to the register, so please contact Xclusively Jaguar for details.
