Welcome to Xclusively Jaguar For all things Jaguar - Across the globe |
![]() |
Welcome to the December 2010 issue of Xclusively Jaguar News. Well, somebody must have been REALLY good this year, to get a Christmas gift like the one above! If you know someone who has been really good this year, and deserves a similar treat, then we have lots to choose from below, as this issue introduces "The Xclusively Jaguar Collection" which features Jaguar gifts suitable for Christmas. Feedback on items purchased and ideas for extending this range are always welcome.
Naturally, I would like to wish all readers and contributors a very Merry Christmas! There will be a few more people reading this than there were when I wished all my readers a Merry Christmas in 2008, 4 months after my first newsletter, so lets hope things continue to grow and see what next year brings!

courtesy of Jaguar Cars

With the help of James Hutchison, we have created a small selection of Christmas gifts, which includes a sweater, polo shirt, driving gloves and car rug. More items will be added to the range on a seasonal basis, and we are looking for feedback on products and ideas for new additions to the collection.

Pocket Classics have recently launched a range of miniature classic cars for children and adults alike. The cars are half-size tributes to much loved classics, and include the Jaguar E-Type!
Each car is lovingly handmade, taking in excess of 450 hours to craft. Powered by 110cc petrol or electric motors, the cars are capable of speeds up to 46mph.
I understand from the makers, that there is just 1 E-type available for sale before the end of 2010, after which, a limited number of build slots are available for 2011. Cars can be built to a buyer's exact specification with any combination of interior and exterior colour.

Last month we featured a plea from Andy Davey who lives in the village of Fivehead in Somerset.
Next July, Andy is taking part in a charity car run to Rome, with a view to raising money for local charities and Cancer Research.
Andy needs a suitable car for the event, which is held over 5 days, with new challenges every day.
The precise route will not be released until next April, but passes through France, Monaco, the Swiss Alps, Italy, and finally to Rome.
The event is based around using low-value cars, with a minimum age of 14 years - i.e. 1996 (N reg) or before, and a purchase price of £150.
The catch is, that once purchased, there appears to be no maximum amount which can be spent on making the car safe and legally roadworthy!
Andy hopes to secure the assistance of Jaguar related businesses who are willing to help fund the project, in return for advertising.
This can include company logos on the car itself, plus free advertising via Xclusively Jaguar and the media coverage which the event will attract.
Andy is open to all ideas and proposals, so if you think you can help, please contact Xclusively Jaguar and we will put you in touch with Andy and set the ball rolling!
In the last 24 hours I have been informed that SNG Barratt have also just introduced a full replacement package for XK8/XKR (X100) wood veneer and carbon fibre interior trim. Full details will follow in the January newsletter, or in the meantime, please follow the link to SNG Barratt. |

As you may know, workshop manual information has been difficult to source for the X200 S-type. Recently however, there have been a number of sellers on e-bay offering JTIS/TSB discs purporting to have the information we require. Two of our members mailed me recently to inform me about this development. One of them even sent me a disc for perusal. Many thanks for that!
Just the other day, the subject came up again. I got onto e-bay and purchased a disc pack for £3.99p including p&p! They arrived this morning and I can confirm that both work with Vista.
Disc 1 is a 225MB, 12,856 image package that downloads direct to your Pictures file. It does not seem to have an index and I have not investigated the full contents yet for obvious reasons. There are a few evenings reading here!
Disc 2 is instant access to a pdf file. It contains Technical Service Bulletins for the X200 S-type. It is easy to use. It looks most useful. Again more reading to be done.
At £3.99p delivered (UK), this is an absolute gift and should answer many of the questions we have had difficulty finding answers to.
Editors comment:
I have just checked out ebay and found that if you enter JAGUAR JTIS DEALER SERVICE & REPAIR MANUAL CD into the Search bar, it will take you to a selection of the above. Some appear to be copies, others display the official Jaguar logo, but are cheaper! Beware: Not all sellers have 100% positive feedback!
If you are unsure, please contact Mike Kennedy 07974 131127 eagmarine@hotmail.co.uk for further information.

The Jaguar Enthusiasts' Club has a panel of Insurers which includes Footman James.Martyn Raybould MCMI, explains the importance of specialist insurance for your Classic or Modern Jaguar. |
Paul Matthews, managing director of club insurance partner, Footman James, said: "It is extremely important that classic vehicle owners do not just choose the cheapest policy when it comes to insurance. It may seem good value, however, often the cheapest policies will not include cover options which will safeguard the value of your classic vehicle should you need to make a claim."
"Specialist insurance brokers like Footman James tailor their policies to the needs and requirements of the classic vehicle owner, so it is worth taking the time to talk to a specialist to make sure your vehicle is fully protected."
Extra policy benefits for no additional charge
All Footman James classic policies include European and UK breakdown cover, legal expenses cover, road rage personal accident cover and emergency travel cover.
Most other companies do not include these as standard, so if you are shopping round for insurance, you must remember that any price comparison has to take these extra costs into account.
Different insurance providers include different services as standard, so it is essential that you find out exactly what you are getting for your money. That is the only way to truly compare policies.
Agreed Value Policies
Heaven forbid your pride and joy should come to grief, but if that fateful situation should arise, nearly all FJ policies offer 'agreed value'. This means the vehicle's true value is confirmed when you first take out the policy.
With an agreed value policy, because the value of the vehicle has already been confirmed, it doesn't have to be negotiated or proven in the event of a claim, taking that extra stress away.
Where the car is declared a write-off – where it is beyond repair within the true value (however, repairable within DVLA guidelines) most enthusiasts would relish the chance to rebuild their pride and joy, so in some cases Footman James offers a cash settlement and retention of salvage. The customer is then free to source the parts and restore their beloved vehicle to its former glory, if they choose to.
If, thankfully, your classic has only suffered minor damage, we at Footman James appreciate that trusting your pride and joy at any old body shop just isn't on. We don't insist on a particular repairer but suggest instead that the owner goes to their own known and trusted repairer or another garage of their choice. Or if they need us to, we can make some suggestions as to suitable repairers - but what's really important is that it is a classics specialist.
Specialist Club Rates
Footman James has been in partnership with the JAGUAR ENTHUSIAST Club for over 10 years, and our club insurance schemes offer members specialist JAGUAR ENTHUSIAST premiums. Each policy taken out also earns money for the club on a commission basis, so there are benefits all round.
Limited Mileage Options
We realise that touring isn't so much fun in the pouring rain, so if your classic only hits the road on the few occasions when the British sun shines, there's an ideal option for you.
Our limited mileage option is the perfect choice for enthusiasts to benefit from a cheaper premium. It usually comes in various bands, such as 1,500, 3,000 and 4,500 miles per year.
It works on the principle that the fewer miles you drive, the less your risk of an accident, therefore, the cheaper your insurance. Cars that are more than 30 years old, which many JAGUAR ENTHUSIASTS cars are, automatically qualify for unlimited mileage, which is usually charged at the same premium as the 3,000 mile option.
Multi-Vehicle policies
Footman James appreciates that some very lucky people are the proud owners of more than one classic vehicle, so we offer customers multi-vehicle cover, which allows drivers to insure several classics on one policy.
This results in a lower premium, and means motorists can spend their time enjoying their classics, and only have to remember the one renewal date instead of several.
Multi-vehicle cover makes life a whole lot easier for classics collectors and provides better value for money than seemingly cheap one-off quotes for individual vehicles.
Footman James is also aware that most classics owners might not want to risk taking their much-loved vehicle on everyday errands such as the terrifying weekly supermarket run, and instead have a modern vehicle as their 'daily run-around'. We allow for modern vehicles to be included on our multi-vehicle policies, providing the majority of the vehicles on the policy are classified as 'classic'.
The only way to make sure your insurance policy suits all your needs is to discuss all the policy options with an expert, such as Footman James.
by Mike Kennedy, S-type Forum Co-ordinator and Hon Secretary of JEC Portsmouth Region,
The December meeting and all subsequent meetings will be held at The Churchillian, Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth, again on the second Monday of the month at 8.00pm.

Here is a final selection of the goodies that will be coming forward in Ian Cooling’s Jaguar Automobilia Distant Auction.
Ian tells me that he is running around 5-6 weeks late with the catalogue. The reason being that two superb collections were entered rather late in the day, but he knew that if he refused them, they would have gone elsewhere.
Publication date for the catalogue is now early/mid December with closure in early/mid January, to take account of the Christmas and New Year breaks. To ensure that his customers are not penalised by the UK Vat increase to 20% on 4 January, Ian will only invoice at the old rate of 17.5% and carry the balance himself.

Jaguar XK140 Explored - full dust jacket shown
Finally, due in on 23rd November! The few advance copies we had flown in for review and promotional purposes have evoked hugely enthusiastic comments, with most people being simply amazed at the quality and the detail included. "The best book you have produced so far" said one regular purchaser of PJ Publishing books. Typical of the response is that of XK140 owner Eric Capron who has kindly allowed me to quote from his post on the Jag-lovers website XK list:-
"(My copy of this book) arrived a couple of days ago and I haven't been able to put it down. Rather than using photographs the book includes thousands of absolutely superb drawings. The detailed information that goes with the drawings is incredible and the amount of research that will have been necessary to collect this information together defies belief. The use of drawings is very clever because there is so much more clarity in a drawing but the work involved is enormous."
"Often on this list there are questions on topics such as how the wiring harness is routed, what the differences are in the individual parts between early and late cars, colour schemes, decals, pedal shapes and many many other things. It's all there in the book as well as chapters on production, competition and so on and some period photographs that I haven't seen before. This is a fantastic piece of work and a restorer's dream....."
"...I have no connection other than having just bought a copy and I can tell you that if you have an XK 140 and you are the slightest bit interested in originality or how it should be put together then you must get this book."

This month we broaden the scope of XJ40 Diaries and open the door to ALL Jaguar owners and invite everyone to submit their own regular or one-off diary entry, along with a link to your own personal site, if you have one. We hope you will enjoy and benefit from reading about our experiences.
I bought the Jaguar at an auction site on the 31st October 2008 which is Halloween, and instead of going trick or treating I decided to phone up the guy who I just bought the Jaguar from and I arranged pick-up that evening. After a 40 mile drive to Ipswich we arrived at the guy's house, and the minute I saw the Jaguar for the first time I fell in love with it and also decided that minute that I will keep the Jaguar for as long as I possibly can.
It was a stunning example of an XJ40, and in my opinion worth about £1000 more than the £170 I paid for it. All the wings, bonnet, bootlid and doors were in really good condition and so was the original paint. But there was a reason I paid such a small amount of money for such a great car… It was a non runner.

Oliver as seen on ebay |
|---|
After an adventurous, embarrassing, head-turning 40 mile tow home, I got the Jaguar booked in at a friendly local garage to see his real condition mechanically and also to get him running. After a 1 week wait for the garage to have some time, the Jaguar got a tow to the local garage, and after two days the mechanic got back to me saying the big red cat roars once more and is ready for pick-up. The garage was cheap too at £150 with £125 of that being labour.
![]() |
View larger image of Oliver |
|---|
Then as it ended up being half-way through November and with it getting colder and damper by the minute the Jaguar got put in the garage and stored for a fair few months until July 2009, so that it could get MOT'd ready for the summer. Unfortunately, the MOT got delayed by 2 weeks and then more bad luck when I found out that the Jaguar failed on rotten inner sills and too much play in the front wheel bearings. So took it back to the cheap local garage and when they got that done by the 17th August 2009, the warm days sadly were almost over. But the good thing was that he passed!

|---|
Then for no reason whatsoever I thought that the Jaguar should be named Oliver. And throughout the cold months of 2009 he remained on the road and was used daily, but he still got his weekly bath. Then in February 2010 the adventures began. Starting on the 28th when dad filled Oliver up with diesel. So we got mum's Volvo to give Oliver a tow home where all the diesel got syphoned out. Then Oliver was filled with 10 litres of fresh petrol and he started straight away before cutting out after 10 seconds when the remains of the little amount of diesel in the tank got though the filter and into Oliver's fuel lines. I managed to get him going shortly after he cut out, but he wouldn't idle, misfired slightly and smoked like hell. When literally everything was covered in smoke Oliver stopped and ran as smooth as he used to.
| Stuck at the petrol station after mis-fuelling! | ![]() |
|---|
Then after all the big snow was gone and there was just ice left on country roads, Dad was going shopping in Oliver and ended up spinning out into a field at 20MPH! Luckily some classic car guy was following him, saw what happened, pulled over and gave my Dad a lift home. I got pretty annoyed when I found out what had happened, but was soon cheered up when Dad told me how lucky he was to miss the trees and the ditch. So luckily Oliver escaped without any damage at all. Just a very muddy underside, wheels, and the whole rest of him. I biked down to the field where Oliver was sitting and went to ask a local farmer with a tractor whether he could pull us out. And he told me that he would be more than happy to help.
| Stuck in a field after skidding on ice! | ![]() |
|---|
The rest of the year was pretty idle and nothing went wrong. Then came the summer and I managed to persuade Mum to go camping! We took the Jaguar to Plymouth and all the way there was fine, didn't miss a beat, no warning lights, everything working as it should.
![]() Waiting to go on the ferry |
Oliver on the ferry! |
|---|
The way back however was slightly different............
It started off with trouble to start, then Fuel Fail 8 followed by Circuit 1 Failure causing the antenna for the radio not to work. With the Fuel Fail showing we didn't move from the campsite until I knew what the fault was, so a quick text to Rob Jenner and he told me it was the resistor for the hot start sensor, so we set off and that may have been why it had trouble starting in the morning. Fault cleared after re-starting the engine and didn't reappear. Fuel Fail 2 did, however, so Oliver was running slightly lumpy with a failed Air-Flow Meter. But when we got Oliver home I found out that it was due to damp connections.
About 100 or so miles into our journey a rather large rock hit the bonnet taking some paint with it before hitting the windscreen and causing an annoying 5mm scuff on the bonnet and a little chip in the windscreen.
That was only the beginning though! After a visit to Browns Lane, which I will report on in due course, we pulled over at McDonalds and mum went with my little brother to get the food, not telling me she locked the car and then put the keys on the rear right hand side carpet where I was getting my stuff ready to give it a quick go over with Meguiars Speed Detailer, while they got the food and then shut the right hand side rear door. Yeah. Big problem there we were about 100 miles away from home and locked out of the car, fortunately though she found a guy in a van on the same McDonalds car park and asked him whether he knew what to do. And guess what...HE DID! He went to his van stayed in there for a bit and came out with a wire and a load of long flat-bladed screwdrivers. He then very carefully prised away the chrome and slid in a bar to hold the chrome in place while he lifted the locking knob on the driver's door with the wire And thanks to him Oliver still has all his windows (mum's plan was to break one of them to get in...NEVER )
![]() |
When we did get home, I managed to sort a couple of things on Oliver, tidied up the garage and as you read this Oliver is tucked away inside a warm-ish garage under his cover to stop him getting dusty. |
|---|

Well, in a nut shell, no it won't!
The reason being that the X300 has an electronic flap set up, not vacuum operated like the XJ40, and the heater box is a different shape.
Anyway, I don't give up easily and I really wanted an X300 dash in my 40, so I bought an XJ40 dash on ebay for a tenner and cut it in half. Then with the bottom half of the 40 dash I stripped out my 300 dash, bare to it's shell, and joined them together............. and to my surprise they fit 100% !!!
![]() |
![]() The Forty dash....... in half! |
|---|
![]() And the 40 bottom half joined to an X300 outer skin! |
![]() |
|---|
I'm really pleased this has worked out so well........ just got to glue it together and fit it now!

As can be seen from the picture below, this month, Swallow has been joined by "Brucie". Brucie is a long wheel base X300 (technically an X330) 4 litre Sovereign in Spruce Green (hence the name, as Spruce Green always sounds like Bruce Green, when said quickly over the phone!)
Swallow is not sure how he feels about Brucie - an X330 4 litre Sovereign can be quite a threat to an XJ40 3.2S..........will Swallow hold his own, or is this his curtain call?

During the development of the XJ220 several cars were produced for various tests i.e. Fueling, Thermal & Cooling Work, Speed testing as well as general operational tests. The first inital cars from TWR were produced as per intended production specification. These being development vehicles were inherently full of minor problems affecting reliability. Jaguar pinned quite a lot on the success of the XJ220 (nothing new there) and therefore could not risk the potential loss of sales if one was seen in the public arena broken down and being recovered!
To complete high speed testing and various other aspects of vehicle proving they made use of the Milbrook high speed circuit. This was all well and good but did not allow them the ability to test the car in suburban and urban traffic conditions in terms of cooling and engine tune stability.
![]() |
In order to resolve these issues TWR discovered the long wheel base transit held the same wheel base dimension of the XJ220 and as a result re-shelled an XJ220 platform with a Ford Transit body-shell. Note the XJ220 wheels - a bit of a give-away! |
![]() |
This also allowed access to the engine whilst running. |
The vehicle was due to be scrapped following the liquidation of TWR along with several other development vehicles, but having discovered this Don Law took the vehicle into his own private collection and I beleieve he still has it.
Since then it has made several appearences at the Goodwood Festival of Speed!
Joe found these pictures on PassionFord - Does anyone know where they originally came from, or have others?

Tom's car did not leave the factory as a Coupe, so does not really qualify for the Coupe Register. It does in fact, have so many modifications that it was hard to decide if perhaps it should be in the Replica Register, but there again, with its Chevrolet engine and 9 x 20 alloys, it is unique, rather than a replica!
| Tom took a standard Series 3 XJ saloon, and with the guidance of a friendly panel beater, and use of his workshop and equipment, he created his dream car! The only condition being, that the car was gone on Monday mornings, due to limited storage space. The car was purchased for this project, in reasonable condition, with the 350 chev engine already installed. | ![]() |
| The first weekend, the Jaguar was stripped of interior trim and glass.
The roof then came off ....... in less than 10 minutes! |
![]() |
| Next, the car was cut in half, in front of the rear seat, and 12" was removed from the length of the vehicle. | ![]() |
| Strengthening was then added inside the sills, before sliding the two halves back together and tacking them in place. | ![]() |
| Additional bracing was added from windscreen to rear half, for transporting. Then back home on the tow truck. That was the first weekend done. | ![]() |
| The next weekend was another tow truck ride. Welding was completed across the floor, and the rear doors cut to size and tacked into place. The shortened driveshaft was installed, with brake and fuel lines being reconnected. Then back on the truck again! | ![]() |
| Brakes bled and fuel added, and the next trip to the panel shop was under its own power. One seat , no glass , no seatbelt, odd wheels, and lots of stares from other drivers! | ![]() |
| Over the next few weeks the welding of the rear doors was completed, and the body filler applied. Lots of sanding, and then more dismantling, in preparation for paint. This is where Tom handed the project over to the professionals. | ![]() |
|
The next job for Tom was to reassemble everything. Rear door cards were cut down to size, and rear seat cushion shortened to give a little move room in the back. XJS seats have been fitted as the originals did not fold forward. ..........and there you have it |

I continue to update this when I can although time is short with other projects plus I'm supposed to be retired now! Thanks to all those who send me related news snippets and have made kind comments about the book.

Visit Mike Hawthorn Tribute Site
The Tribute site had its biggest ever influx of visitors when the BBC decided to show the one hour analysis programme they had made about the 1955 Le Mans Disaster - on the first showing our normal 600-800 visitors per day went past 6000 and this happened on the subsequent multiple reruns on BBC 4 and so on.
It featured a reconstructed never-seen-before film taken by a spectator (who was hit by debris and ended up in hospital) of the actual crash made up from 58 stills owned by Paul Skilleter.
Deadliest Crash is a dramatic story of the day racing was changed forever. The carnage, seen through eye witness accounts, includes the stories of the survivors from the packed grandstands and members of the Mercedes and Jaguar teams at the heart of the disaster.
This PAL format DVD includes the first ever showing after 50+ years of 58 frames taken by a spectator (who was injured by debris) reconstructed into the original film sequence, courtesy of Paul Skilleter. It is a really chilling experience to watch Macklin suddenly swerve into the path of Levegh as the future World Champion slows for the pits. Paul's frames also clearly show that Mike did NOT suddenly swerve in front of Macklin in the first place but was slowing, and heading for the pits, and well before them - however, watch the DVD and make up your own mind! Some of it is somewhat harrowing - be warned!
Courtesy of a big Mike Hawthorn fan, Nigel Webb's private museum dedicated just to Mike, opened in 2009 and is still developing!
The first edition of Mike's biography is now sold out (although see later below) but the reprint from 2009 with a number of corrections and some added material is currently available from Paul Skilleter (who also published it) at a discounted price. It's been described variously as "the best motoring book I've ever read" and "book of the year". There are many more reviews and comments to read on the Mike Hawthorn Tribute site.
Please consider obtaining the book for your library, it uniquely contains Mike's life story all the way from birth through to death, and lots in between, told by those that knew him. If you order now, you can buy it at a discounted price and we will supply a copy signed by both of us at no extra cost, if you request it when ordering.
There are a few First Edition Limited Edition Leather Bound signed copies still available but these are not in perfect condition. Defects are generally small (bumped shipper or slip case etc) and these are available from Paul Skilleter Books at £133 inc UK shipping. Contact Paul Skilleter Books via the enquiry form on his site if you want more details of what there is available.
People have asked whether a second volume of Mike's biography is in the offing. While we have enough material and new photos to produce quite a lot of additional and updated material on Mike and his life, plus corrections, until the reprinted current volume is substantially sold out, there is little chance of a new volume, a decision based solely on economic grounds. The printed book market has been depressed for over a year now since it was released and shows little sign of improving in the near future.
One possibility is an electronic version of the book as this is a rapidly expanding market. Advances in Electronic Publishing - output is mostly in straight black and white at the moment with few images - mean that early in the new year it should be possible to produce a book online in full colour with color images!
An application called Blio is a free e-reader that supports new formats and, if you want, you can try the idea out and see what it can do: Sample Blio
The free application can be downloaded immediately to all Windows-based devices with applications for iOS, Android and Silverlight platforms available soon. There are already loads of books available to view. Once I have access to the tools to produce books in this format, I'll see what can be done.
Any new edition would include the not-told-before story of Tony Keefe, PC 155, who Paul and I subsequently interviewed. He was in the first police car on the scene of Mike's fatal crash along with Doug Brazier. Tony was also the reporting officer at the inquest (newspaper reports confirm this).
Amazingly, he still has his complete handwritten police pocketbook for that year with five pages of very readable as-it-happened pencilled notes of what he saw that tragic morning outside Guildford on the A3! Interestingly, his story differs from many other accounts - but with his book to back it up....! There is also a very clear police photograph of him directing traffic past the Coombs Garage recovery truck with the wreck of VDU waiting to be hauled on to it.
You can see that photo and a photo of his pocket book on the home page of the Tribute site.
A batch of 23 original press photos came up on eBay a while back, all related to Mike and mostly crash related from the day he died. Many were also ones I hadn't seen before plus variations on others that had been seen.
One notable photo is a nice image of Mike standing in the cold chatting to Nick Syrett at Brands Hatch late in 1958 where our then new World Champion acted as starter for the Silver City race. Mike is wearing his flying boots...
...but in another, sadder, photo a burly policeman is seen from behind walking along in the Coombs garage area carrying these same boots away having rescued them from the boot of the mangled VDU 881. He's also carrying a white cushion or pillow in his other hand.
Lying upside down on the grass by a piece of the tree, VDU's front bumper and badge bar stand forlornly alone. The ferocity of the impact can be judged by the severely crumpled state the badge bar and bumper is in, in this and another photo, although Mike's BRDC badge looks intact and has survived to this day (as has the badge bar, bent exactly as it was then). Sadly, the Registration plate reads 'DU 881' having lost a letter in the crash....
In the original version of Golden Boy, we noted that someone was regularly leaving flowers and a note with a photo from the 1950s on Mike's grave - the note was marked 'Forever. D'. We had no idea who it was then but subsequently the lady concerned appeared at the book launch and identified herself. We have spoken to her many times since and some basic info was added to the reprint of Golden Boy last year but many of you with the original print run will not have seen this.
There is much more of a story here, as we have discovered since. 'D's name is Dorrie Mahoney (Dorrie Aldred-Parker as she was) and she was Mike's girlfriend in the mid-1950s and remained a good friend afterwards. She still has a photographic portrait that he commissioned of her in 1955.
After his Casablanca win, Mike gave her a lovely piece of jewelry that she still has. With it came a note saying "Thank you for always believing in me."
Dorrie has kindly agreed to be interviewed for her full story and Paul and I will do this when we can. It should be very interesting from what we've gathered so far!
Tim is one of the first Hawthorn fans I met - he knew Mike and owns Mike's first race car, the Riley Ulster Imp, still in perfect running order.
Tim holds several gatherings each year at the Barley Mow at Tilford, one of Mike's favourite pubs. Anyone is free to attend, although it is courteous to let him know beforehand, so that he can account for the number of lunches to provide. All are welcome from 11:30 onwards and can expect to see a few Hawthorn related cars there plus lots of knowledgeable friendly fans.
Next years gatherings are scheduled (provisionally) for the 19th and 22nd October 2011 to celebrate the time of Mike's World Championship win and 10th/11th April 2011, around Mike's birthday.
Please contact Tim via Helen Ely on helen-ely@tiscali.co.uk with your details or queries well in advance.
Another DVD that is well worth watching can be obtained off eBay and elsewhere and is called 'On the Limit' from Duke Video, released back in September this year. The original B/W film coverage from BP lasts 22 mins, is of very good quality with full commentary, and has some really terrific shots of Mike Racing the No 1 D-type from all sorts of angles. Mike is seen walking around (Commentator: "Mike Hawthorn wanders around as though out for an afternoon stroll") chatting as well, and almost managed to clobber Lofty England when coming into the pits for a driver change - Lofty has to get out of his way quickly! The refuelling sequence is also terrifying with milk churns of fuel thrown into a large funnel, sloshing out all over the car! Imagine that, today?
Stirling wins of course, as Mike broke down near the race end anyway, while running second, but there are some really nice studies of the two racing close together. Peter Collins and Bob Berry also feature.
Well worth the £14 or so to get hold of the PAL DVD. There are also two other races on the DVD although neither features Mike.
One is 13 mins in colour from the first Silverstone Production Touring Cars race in 1958 with Tommy Sopwith and some fantastic Mk1 racing /cornering shots. The other is from the Goodwood International Race Meeting in 1950 and lasts just over 5 mins.
Some of you may not have seen the 1:43 model of Mike's Mk1 saloon that SMTS released. The only one I've seen was terrible with a malformed body squashed on one side and a Mk2 grille!
For those that have enquired after Gary Oxley's proposed model of VDU 881, Gary has told me he has now stopped making models.
This is the custom enamel plaque used on the Limited Edition Mike Hawthorn "Golden Boy" book. It is a very accurate copy of the original plaque used by the Tourist Trophy Garage in East Street, Farnham, from towards the end of 1958 on vehicles supplied by the garage, but larger at 50mm diameter, although it has no mounting holes.
Mike designed it himself as verified by people who worked at the TT Garage and it has a central St Christopher raised dome.
It is marketed by Paul Skilleter as a standalone item at £15 inc P&P Worldwide - it was recently favourably reviewed by Classic & Sports Car with no warning and the remaining stock sold out in a few days. Paul now has new stocks.
Can be mounted on a car with suitable adhesive if required. Ideal for your replica Mk 1 saloon or other Jaguar (in fact, for any other marque that the TT Garage supplied!)
Many of you will know of diverse artist Roy Nockolds - he was a personal friend of Mike's and the racing driver featured in a number of his works. He even painted Mike's Farnham cottage up Folly Hill for him where he lived in the late 1950s - I spotted it when talking to the present owners of the cottage, encountering it hanging up in the smallest room of the house! The owners had no idea at all of its significance and now treasure it. The story is recounted with images in Golden Boy.
A while back I was lucky to acquire two original Roy Nockolds photographic plates, both depicting Mike racing! These are the studio master copies that Roy kept of everything he painted. And with them came the rights to reproduce them.
Both came as black and white negatives - masters taken from these have subsequently been sympathetically coloured by Paul Skilleter's brother Andrew. He is a professional artist, well known in some circles for his work with the BBC on Doctor Who and other series.
The first painting has never been seen in public before as far as I know in either colour or black and white! It appears to be a private commission and is not signed by Roy - it's possible that the original commission costs were never paid or some other problem arose. It is perfectly genuine though and appears in the list of plates that were in the original Nockolds Archive as sold at auction by Mrs Nockolds in 1995.
It is one of a number of studies of Mike in the Ferrari Dino 246 depicting him racing for the world title in 1958 in Casablanca, Morocco on the 19th October. Although finishing 2nd, he took the first British World F1 Championship by just one point from Stirling Moss.
The second has never been seen in public in coloured form. It appears to be a private commission by a Mrs Stuart Thomson and is signed by Roy. It dramatically shows Mike piloting his No 9 Cooper-Bristol T20 during driving rain at Boreham in August 1952.
Jaguar Cars' 'Lofty' England was there especially to see Mike in action and offered him a test drive in a Jaguar C-type as a result - he broke the course record within 5 laps!
They are both available as either mounted/stretched, or rolled, high quality 20 x 24" Gicleé canvas prints.

XJ12 Series III |
|---|---|
| Steffi sent me some pictures and details of this 1982 Series 3 V12, currently for sale. It has FSH, all previous MOT certificates, and the original book pack and manual. Current MOT is new and the odometer reads a genuine 50,000 miles! Being a V12 it has all creature comforts usually associated with a modern car! Excellent mechanics and smooth gearchange. New equipment includes: 4 Pirelli's, rear half exhaust, fuel tank, handbrake, anti roll bar and steering rack bushes. Any necessary welding has been sorted. The Doeskin hide interior and Regent Grey bodywork is in excellent condition with very minor paint bubbling in two areas. The veneer is all good, but it does need some new carpets. |

Ron Walker sent in this photo of a 1933 SS1 Coupe that was in the 'Champion of Champions' concours last weekend at the NEC, Birmingham.

Ron commented.......
The car, owned by Michael Jewell, is absolutely stunning and was unlucky not to have won the Jaguar Drivers Club concours, it was beaten by an equally fabulous white XK150.
It was great to meet the owner of the SS1 and to be able to take a good look at the car which is of course identical to our Yellow and Chocolate Brown SS1.
We also met John Ratcliffe, the previous owner of the James Hull car (MJ 2626) who was very informative and who has since, very generously, sent us some parts for the SS1 that he did not require.
I was competing in the 'Autoglym' concours with my Lotus Elite type 14 and in which, a fabulous black XK150 owned by Duncan Valentine was runner up to an Austin Healey 3000, the judges separating the cars by just 1 point!

Is this enough for a register, do you think?
Steve Holtum recently contacted Xclusively Jaguar with the exciting news that he had come across what he hoped was a genuine SS stored in a barn in New Zealand. Pictures and information can be found in the November issue of Xclusively Jaguar News.
Meanwhile, upon my advice, Steve had contacted Terry Mcgrath in Australia, and Terry was able to confirm that he knew of the car and its time in Singapore, (coincidentally, Steve even has hand written notes from the late owner to Terry). Steve and Terry have agreed the chassis was from the saloon model and has been cut down to match the 100 and therefore compromised, and serial numbers have yet to be located and confirmed.
If anyone is interested in further details, please contact Xclusively Jaguar.
