XJ-SC TOW HOOK As they do not fit in the Cabriolet –or in any XJ-S for that matter- I would like to fit a simple tow hook to the car. It need not be a strong one as I do not intend to tow a caravan or other heavy trailer. Viewing the back of the car, it does not look easy, so I wonder whether anyone owning such a car has ever fitted a tow hook? Any information would be welcome! Andy Harvey (The XJ-Saviour) suggests: Does anyone have any other useful information to add to this? If so, please email Rudy Schats direct. |

Cats and Mice come out to play!The third meeting of the JEC in Spain took place on Sunday 27th November 2011 at Restaurant Los Almendros in Torrellano, near Alicante Airport. I wish to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members. I was worried about the turnout this time as many of the usual attendees were in the UK and this meeting clashed with a major car club rally in Javea, then we had 4 members drop out at the last minute due to ill health or "ill cars". Even taking all this into consideration, the turn out was excellent, the numbers made up with lots of new faces giving us 38 people for lunch and 19 fabulous cars. Among the highly polished collection of automotive art was a regular attendee with a fabulous red Jaguar XK120 drophead and a stunning black E type with a special 4.2 Ltr. 300 bhp engine. Among the newcomers were superb examples of the Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible, an exceptional example of a 1999 Jaguar Sovereign Long Wheel Base saloon, a fabulous XKR Coupe and of course "The Guvnors" XK8 Convertible. More examples of XJS's, XK8's, XJ's, X Types and S Types completed the collection this time. The title of the article Cats and Mice come out to play, was going to be so apt as the local Mini owners club was also supposed to be meeting at the same time, but they never arrived - perhaps "The Cats" chased them away! It was a little chilly on the day, with overcast skies, but not enough to dampen our spirits or our enthusiasm. A few drinks and coffees on the terrace and meet the new faces then inside for lunch. I had arranged a Jaguar Quiz for this meeting, which was designed to really challenge the enthusiasts, questions were distributed and they had the lunch time to complete it. Regarding lunch, Los Almendros always does us proud, the service was spot on and the food was fabulous, the famous Los Almendros bread with tomato and aioli, plates of cheese and ham, a pork, peppers and herb dish, new to me, then a lamb shank, followed by a dessert. All this washed down with copious bottles of a fabulous wine and cups of steaming coffee all for just 18.00 Euros + IVA. Lunch completed, the quiz papers were swapped and marking began, the knowledge of some of the members is phenomenal. In the end the winner was Alfonso Cuervo-Arango, he was presented with a unique bottle of JEC wine and a winners certificate. |

JAGUAR CLASSIC PARTS & GRANGE JAGUARby Letitia Mace |

Was it by chance that my first two Jaguars were JCP and YEO?Having successfully raised my family to the point where they no longer desired my constant attention, I took stock of my life and realised that my mission was accomplished and aside from the daily grind, there wasn't really much else required of me. I needed a challenge! At this point we moved to a smaller house, so I decided to get rid of everything I didn't want or need and become "Xclusively Jaguar" and in an instant I realised that I had just invented a new idea !! Whatever Xclusively Jaguar is or becomes, my ultimate aim is that it shall be the best that I can achieve at that point, and like Jaguar Cars, it will always be reaching forward into the future with eagerness and optimism. Now sponsored by Jaguar Classic Parts and Grange Jaguar, Yeoford Way, Exeter ….. achievements which are part of a dream I never thought I would realise, I look back and remember that my first two Jaguars were registered JCP and YEO …..was it by chance or was it an omen? Looking for a sensible family estate my husband Nigel and I trudged from sales lot to sales lot, frowning at uninspiring cars in equally uninspiring colours, until suddenly we found ourselves standing either side of a bright red XJ6 with no price on it. "That's nice!" Nigel commented, to which I replied "If it's nice we can't afford it, and if we can afford it, it's not as nice as it looks!" A month later, getting desperate, we returned to the same sales lot to see if anything new had come in. The red XJ6 was still there, now with a price of £2500 which was just within our budget. Like many people, we assumed that Jaguars would be expensive, so my comment this time was "I told you it wasn't as nice as it looks!" Another fortnight, and we were watching Top Gear when Jeremy Clarkson happened to make the remark "The Jaguar XJ6 is currently the best used car bargain on the market!" Nigel and I just looked at one another, and the next morning we were back at the sales lot arranging a test drive and reassuring each other that you could definitely fit as much in an XJ6 saloon as you could in the average family estate car ….and we later proved it !! I took one look at her registration number, J256 JCP and for some reason it stuck fast in my mind, although I had no idea of the relevance of those initials – Jaguar Classic Parts ..........so was JCP, as she was always known to us, an omen? A few months later JCP was joined by YEO - a 4 litre Sovereign. YEO had been originally supplied and serviced by Grange of Exeter, which is located in Yeoford Way! Registered B2 YEO he was purchased by us from Brian YEO of Barnstaple, and when I went to work at Grange, YEO was once again serviced there. Now Grange of Exeter are proud to sponsor Xclusively Jaguar …..was YEO another omen? |

When I worked for Grange of Exeter some years ago, we were all running around like headless chickens looking for leadership which was not forthcoming! Grange was at that time owned by a company which has apparently since gone bust. Now owned by the Cambria Group, everything has changed. After speaking to Jamie Steel, the After Sales Manager, Brucie was booked in for the following week to have a "Visual Health Check" and to investigate why no warm air was being delivered to the interior cabin. The morning before his "appointment" with the Service Department I received a polite text to remind me of my booking, followed by a courtesy phone call in the afternoon. Wow! This was unheard of in my day – simple, effective and instilling the confidence that we were in safe and caring hands! On this, his 2nd visit to Grange, I left Brucie sandwiched between a new XJ and an XK. It was raining and as I parked, I was met by a member of staff with a nice big umbrella and escorted to the service reception. Brucie was here to have his engine bay steam cleaned. The upper part was merely cosmetic, in order to take out the hard work of preparing the engine bay for future appearances at Jaguar events. The underside was to be steam cleaned in order to see exactly where the oil leak reported in his VHC emanates from, so that it can be dealt with at a later date. Brake and fuel lines were also cleaned off to see if the "corrosion" noted as advisories in the last 4 MOT's was surface corrosion or something more sinister. Fortunately, once cleaned off, it became apparent that it was only on the surface and a good coating of wax was applied in order to prevent any further deterioration of the fuel and brake lines. Next month, Brucie returns to Grange for his MOT – this is the scary visit !! |

Wandering through the showroom, there were some interesting Jaguars on display ……..the new XJ, an XF, an absolutely mouth-watering shiny black XK, and an E-type ……..WHAT? No, that can't be right? But yes, there really was an E-type in the showroom – and an absolute stunner it was too !! This 1962 Jaguar E-type 3.8 Series 1 drophead was rebuilt from scratch during 1989, using all new and re-conditioned parts, by Fullbridge Restorations, in Maldon, Essex. In 1989, it cost £54,000 to rebuild this car, and the equivalent cost today would be £110,000, and some restorers already charge much more than this! Restoration costs can only increase in the future. Following restoration, it was first displayed in the Grange Jaguar showrooms in October 1989, before Grange moved to its current site, alongside the brand new XJ40's and XJ-S's of the time! Recently, it has been back to Fullbridge for a £20,000 upgrade, to be brought up to the more demanding restoration standards now expected of the highest quality cars, including the addition of triple-laced full stainless steel wire wheels, which will be much easier to keep clean and rust-free from now on. In particular, the fit of the body panels, the accuracy of the shut lines and the quality of the paint finish are now expected to be far higher than was ever achieved by the factory originally. In 1989, it took 2000 man hours to rebuild an E-type, but now it can take 3000 man hours because of the increased expectations. Displayed once more at Grange of Exeter, by kind permission of the current owner, who may be persuaded to part with this icon, it now graces the showroom alongside the latest generation of XK's, XJ's and XF's, adding something a little extra special to the display! For more information on this E-type, or any of the current model range, please phone Grange of Exeter on 01392 202202 |

X300 Engine BayBrucie was returned to me at the end of the day with a squeaky clean engine bay - hopefully, ready to show off at some Jaguar events this year !! I think that any Jaguar power unit is awesome and deserves to be shown off to best advantage. There is nothing more rewarding than being stopped by strangers in a carpark and complimented on the condition of your Jaguar, by someone who cannot quite believe the age of your car, and then to top it all, you discretely pop the bonnet and lift it and see a further look of dis-belief on their faces. At this point, it wouldn't do to have a dirty engine bay, now would it? I like to think that some of them at least will then go out and treat themselves to a Jaguar! Though not perfect, Brucie's engine bay was a lot better than expected, once it had been steam cleaned, finished off with engine cleaner, and dressed with a suitable protectant. At least now that all the grime has been removed it is clear what has recently been replaced, and what needs replacing - the exhaust manifold heatshield for starters !! 4 litre AJ16 |

SEALED FOR LIFE OR NOT?by Rod Doone |

As the owner of a 10 year old Jaguar XK8 convertible with 60,000 miles on the clock I am keen to maintain the car in good condition. LC51EXF, or Elsie as she is affectionately known, has had an interesting career having spent most of her years in Spain before returning to the UK some 2 years back. Her service record, including time in Spain, shows that she was regularly attended to by Jaguar agents. On returning to the UK the potentially troublesome early timing chain and associated tensioners were replaced along with the water pump. As can be seen whilst not in concours d'elegance condition Elsie is still a credit to her makers.
Having checked through the service records, and after reading the many articles published on the XK8 and the sibling XKR, an area for concern was the 5 speed automatic gearbox. There are no scheduled maintenance procedures apart from oil level checking. I had previously owned an XKR which although a couple of years younger than Elsie and with only 39,000 on the clock had never really inspired me with confidence. One area was the automatic gearbox which had inconsistencies in operation and occasionally gave rise to "fault codes" being indicated. Of course the pundits of the marque will be quick to tell you that the XK8 had automatic transmission manufactured by ZF whilst the XKR was blessed with a Mercedes auto box. Elsie's automatic gearbox changed smoothly and in comparison with my experience with the XKR was superior in operation, and I wanted to keep it that way. Having a background in engineering and with experience in rotating electrical machinery leads me to question the rational of the "sealed for life" maintenance set out for this automatic gearbox. |

SEALED FOR LIFE OR NOT?by Rod Doone |

Yes, there is no doubt that there has been a vast improvement in the quality and durability of transmission fluids over the last 20 years. However, it is difficult to accept that after 10 years and 60,000 miles the transmission fluid was still up to the job. Some wear must take place and can the internal magnets and filters catch it all, or are particles suspended in the oil further accelerating wear. No amount of testing can simulate time. The fact that under proving trials a transmission may have covered 100,000 miles is not the same as experiencing the "life cycle" of 10 years of daily usage. The advice of various articles is to have the transmission fluid changed. However, I decided that I needed to know the condition of the oil after this amount of service so decided to have the fluid changed and have the old oil analysed by an independent company. Depending on the results a decision could be made if any further action was necessary, such as removing the oil pan and replacing the filters and magnetic collectors within the box. There is a problem with most automatic transmissions in that whilst there is means of draining the gearbox it is impossible to drain the oil from the torque convertor so at best any oil change will be a partial improvement unless followed up with a further oil change. As it was not practical for me to undertake this oil change I decided to contact Arun, an Independent Jaguar Dealer, in Sussex. Arun could not have been more helpful. They also were of the view that changing the transmission oil would extend the life of the gearbox. Furthermore, they were happy to allow the operation to be viewed and photographed for an article. Regarding analysis of the old oil an internet search located The Oil Lab in Blackburn. Following a telephone call to them they provided by post 2 sampling kits, one for the old oil and one for the new for direct comparison purposes. The Oil Lab is an independent laboratory providing an unbiased analysis and opinion of oil samples. The Office Manager, Paul introduced me to Colin, the technician who was going to carry out the oil change. I also met Craig, the Service Advisor. Once up on the ramp I was able to have a very close look at the underside and was given an expert tour by Craig who has seen the underside of many a Jaguar, young and old, good and not so good. Fortunately, for me, mine was considered to be in exceptionally good condition probably due to the several years spent in the dry climate of Spain. The process of draining and refilling the gearbox is not straightforward, requiring both time and patience. Colin had clearly performed this operation many times, not only with oil changes, but also following the installation of replacement gearboxes. During the draining process I collected about 150 millilitres of the old oil. Once having satisfied himself that as much oil as possible had been drained out, Colin flushed through with the new oil – Jaguar part JLM 20292 - until clean oil flowed through the drain hole. |

With the drain plug in place the new oil was slowly pumped into the box as shown on the photograph below. This is not an easy operation as the available space between the filling orifice and sub frame is fairly tight.
Once the oil started to flow from the filling aperture the car was lowered and the engine started. The car was then raised once again and more oil pumped into the box. The car was then lowered again and the gearbox put through all positions to ensure that both gearbox and torque convertor were completely filled. The engine was run for several minutes for this process to be completed. With the operation complete Colin took Elsie for a road test and declared that all was well. The two oil samples (the new and the old ) were mailed off to The Oil Lab. As you would expect the old oil was opaquely black whereas the new oil is clear and bright red colour. Within three days The Oil Lab emailed the results of their analysis in tabulated form with advisory notes as summarised here: Diagnosis |

So what does all this mean?
|
||
Aluminium |
Levels above 20 ppm indicate significant bearing wear | Old oil = 58 ppm
Copper |
Levels above 50 ppm indicate copper/lead bearing wear | Old oil = 418 ppm
Iron |
Levels above 50 ppm to a maximum of 100 ppm permissible | Old oil = 126 ppm
The ppm reference means "parts per million". In conclusion, the results of this exercise clearly show that those of us who are Jaguar enthusiasts' and want to keep our ageing XK8's well past any warranty responsibility would do ourselves a favour by changing the automatic transmission oil. An interesting fact from this examination is that the old oil, in substance, compared very favourably with the new oil. What had reached unacceptable levels were the metallic particles now in suspension in the old oil. It is reasonable to conclude that when these particles exceed certain limits the wear rate of moving parts will rapidly increase. No doubt without any action taken the durability of the ZF box is such that it might survive beyond 100,000 miles but do you want to take that risk? Cost of replacing transmission oil, say, twice approximately £400 - £500. Cost per litre of ESSO LT71141 or JLM 20292 £24. Cost of replacing gearbox (rebuilt) £3000 +. From these results I will definitely have the oil changed again soon and perhaps, depending on further expert advice, have the oil pan removed and cleaned and any magnets and filters replaced. Many thanks to Arun Service Station at Wisborough Green for their enthusiastic cooperation and to The Oil Lab at Blackburn. |

50TH ANNIVERSARY E-TYPE SCULPTURE UNVEILEDRaising funds for the Henry Surtees Foundationby David Barzilay |

John Surtees unveils the sculpture |
John Surtees with Claudio Barbato and his winning design |

A sculpture that incorporates metal from the award-winning restoration of Jaguar's ultimate Lightweight E-Type, the Lindner Nocker, is to raise money for the Henry Surtees Foundation. It was during the 7,000-hour restoration of this famous vehicle that the idea came about to put a small amount of metal from the original car to a good charitable use and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the famous marque. Classic Motor Cars Limited, Bridgnorth, approached one of the world's leading automotive design schools, appropriately situated in Coventry, home of Jaguar and they agreed that this would be a wonderful project. Classic Motor Cars (CMC) sponsored a competition, which over 40 of the school's students entered. A panel headed by Ian Callum, Head of Jaguar Design, finally chose the piece designed by Claudio Barbato, a third year design student from Bedford. Just five of these beautiful pieces entitled 'E-Motion' will be produced. They are milled out of solid aluminium and mounted on a polished black granite base, into which is set a piece of the original Lindner Nocker metal, formed as a body tag bearing the number of the Lindner Nocker car and distinguished by its individual piece number. |

All monies raised from these five pieces, which are priced at £9,950 each, will go to the Henry Surtees Foundation. This charity was set up after John Surtees' son was tragically killed in a freak accident at Brands Hatch. The Foundation assists people who have suffered accidental brain and physical injuries, providing education and training in technology, engineering and fitness. It also advances young people by developing their skills and capabilities so that they can participate in society as independent and responsible individuals. The sculpture was unveiled earlier this week by John Surtees OBE at the Royal Automobile Club in London, where it will be on show over the Christmas period. John Surtees said: "I had the pleasure of knowing Lofty England, the legendary figure so involved in Jaguar race successes and the development of the E-Type. Lofty kindly arranged for me to have early examples of both 6 and 12-cylinder models. It gives me great pleasure to be associated with this very special sculpture celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the E-Type, and incorporating metal from that ultimate lightweight. I would like to thank Peter Neumark and the Classic Motor Car team at Bridgnorth for their wonderful gesture in providing this support to Henry's Foundation, it is very much appreciated." He added: "Enzo Ferrari was famous for remarking that the E-type was the most beautiful car in the world and as Italy was the home of design, that comment set the seal for Jaguar design and gave it a reputation that lasted for years." "It's very appropriate as Henry had a great love of cars and used to get upset whenever I disposed of one of mine (even though it was usually to fund his racing activities) and I remember him commenting on the E-type in particular." Claudio Barbato said: "The E-type is a car that I've admired my whole life so to have my design chosen was a big honour." Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club Motoring Committee, says: "This is a wonderful charity and the sculpture is all the more appropriate as John Surtees was the recipient of one of the very first E-Types to leave the line in 1961. The Royal Automobile Club is delighted to support such a worthy cause." Anyone interested in purchasing one of the five limited edition pieces should contact the Managing Director of Classic Motor Cars Limited, Nick Goldthorp on +44(0) 174.676.5804. SS CARSLost and Found! |

Recently, there have been some interesting enquiries regarding SS Cars, which are listed below. If anybody has any information on these SS Cars, please contact Xclusively Jaguar and details will be passed on to the owners. John Elmgreen and Terry Mcgrath have a wealth of knowledge on those cars which ended up in the Southern Hemisphere. For more information, please contact Xclusively Jaguar. Production details for SS Cars can be found by contacting JAGUAR HERITAGE and requesting a Heritage Certificate
John DavidsonIn 1965 I bought a 1933 SS car from a garage at the bottom of Box Hill for £10. It had an aluminium engine which had been welded on the block and the body was built out of copper behind the doors. It had a bench seat in cream leather and rod brakes which did not work; we managed to get the engine going and drove it around the campus for a while. Eventually I broke the car down and transported it to Harrogate on top of a 1935 Morris 8, with the engine and wheels inside the car, where it was sold to a chap who restored MG's near The Stray. The radiator was a honeycomb brushed aluminium affair. Has anyone any idea what happened to the car?
Charles LindseyI am interested in production details of a 1948 SS 3.5 Jaguar (MK IV) CHASSIS SL 3370.
John RichardsMy Father bought a new SS1 Coupe in 1932. The Reg No, was WV 4806. I still have a few old photos and wondered if the car is still around? It did not come through any dealership, as such, but rather unusually (even at the time), directly from the Coventry factory. All the servicing/maintenance work was also carried out at the works during the time my Father owned the car (1932/1937). |

Regular readers of these articles will know of my respect for the work of Roy Nockolds in the 1950s that played such an important part in creating the Jaguar legend. Letitia is equally fond of the work of Alan Fearnley and has asked me to review his Jaguar work and I am delighted to do so. He is an artist working in a different era and in a different style. The two artists therefore come at Jaguar art from very different but complementary aspects. Alan Fearnley is internationally recognised as one of the finest motoring artists working today. His work with racing cars and other aspects of the competitive motoring scene is up there with the best. He also has a special ability to create scenes combining people and the cars into a wider story. A Yorkshireman by birth, Alan studied desultorily at Batley College of Art, but learned his craft alongside his fellow artists working in the commercial art world. An early interest in motor sport led to hands-on experience running the "pits" for his elder son's karting exploits and, later as an active participant in the 750MC Kit Car Championship. Alan's painting career developed steadily. He was elected the first chairman of the Guild of Railway Artists, became a member of the Guild of Aviation Artists and exhibited at the Royal Society of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists. Eventually, his reputation was such that he was able to go freelance in the mid-1970s. Early commissions included transportation, especially railways, and military subjects. A friendship with David and Chris Mills of Grand Prix Sportique, opened a new market in limited edition prints signed by the drivers. This thrived, especially through an annual exhibition at the Monaco Grand Prix, leading to many private and corporate commissions. However, Alan eventually tired of this approach as the scene became excessively commercialised and doubts arose whether the buyers were collecting art or autographs! This final shift in style and content of Alan's art led to the range of Jaguar and SS paintings that have become so familiar. Two principal themes have emerged: the cars on the track and the cars in a variety of different settings a long way from the track. In the illustrations that accompany this article, I have aimed to show both. The story now continues in the photos and captions. |

This dramatic painting of the two TWR XJ220Cs at Le Mans in 1993 is an excellent example of the way Alan tackles motor racing. The focus is firmly on the cars with the crowd and scenery showing no detail, just creating a back-drop for the action. It also follows one of the basic tenets of capturing motor sport action, the closer to the cars and the lower the viewpoint the better. This particular painting was a commission from Unipart and was presented to Jaguar to mark the close relationship between the two companies over many years. It now hangs in the Jaguar Heritage Museum in Coventry. |

"The Summer of 1950" is one of my favourite Jaguar paintings. The composition is superb. The lady in the foreground languidly dipping a toe into the stream is the prime focus. The bucolic summer scene is set by hubby (presumably) leaning on his XK120 and deep in his newspaper beside the remains of the picnic. This is also one of Alan's most enigmatic paintings. The question in my mind every time I see this image is "What is she thinking about?" |
||
A similar rural scene to the XK120 painting, but showing a village cricket match on a sunny day with the men watching the game and the ladies talking in the shade. Once more, the car is part of the scene and not the dominating image. This particular painting was commissioned to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the launch of the E Type. Had I not seen the XK120 painting first, I'm sure this would have appealed to me strongly, not least because E Types will always have a special place in my affection. As it is, the XK120 scene by the stream will always win out. |

Another image of hard-driving motor sport. This shows the Rolt/Hamilton 1953 Le Mans winning C Type ahead of the Ferrari 375MM and cutting in at Tertre Rouge to set up for the long run down the Mulsanne straight. The Austin Healey in the background forms a neat visual counter-point to the front cars. As with the XJ220C painting, the cars are the focus and there is only enough detail in the background to provide a context. |
|
This painting of the start of the 1957 Le Mans does not quite work for me. Having looked at it long and hard and compared it with Alan's other Jaguar motor sport painting, I think it is because there is just too much going on. Yes, of course, that's the way it is at the start of any race, however, I think that by trying to cram so many individual cars into the picture with the inevitably high viewpoint, the dramatic impact is actually lessened. Far better, perhaps, to have focussed on the scramble between Ivor Bueb's winning Ecurie Ecosse D Type & the Lewis-Evans/Severi Ferrari in the foreground. |
||
"Morning Ride". Two rides actually and both powered by horse-power! Once more the balance favours the SS 100 (anyone know where CJF 177 is?), but the people and the horses supply a fine counter-point. The perspective view of the countryside also provides an excellent context for the scene. Alan has a definite affinity for the countryside. Away from the race track, his paintings with a rural setting far outweigh the townscapes. |

"Tea in the Garden". This is Letitia's favourite Alan Fearnley painting and I can see exactly why. Alan himself has described it as one that crosses over from being motoring art to being just art. In effect, it is a painting of the two ladies having tea. The car is still quite a strong element, but clearly just part of the background. Overall, the balance in this composition is just right. The car balances the brighter colours of the ladies' clothes and the table-cloth. The wall and the steps place the car in the "middle-distance" and the main backdrop provided by the house but with further depth in the glimpse of the hill beyond to the left of the house. Perfect! |
|
Editor's Note:I don't know how many Jaguar paintings Alan Fearnley created in all, but I could not resist including two more which I know of, although they do not challenge my favourites, which Ian has listed above!

The facility for advertising Jaguars for sale, is now closed, with only those Jaguars previously listed remaining until further notice. Private and trade advertisers with interesting Jaguar or Daimler cars may wish to submit relevant details and pictures to be considered for inclusion in one issue of Xclusively Jaguar News, and remain in the archive thereafter, where they may be picked up by browsers entering relevant keywords into a search engine. Otherwise, I would recommend Jag Ads as an excellent marketing facility for the selling and purchasing of Jaguar and Daimler cars of all ages. If you live in the UK and are looking for a new, or relatively new, Jaguar, perhaps with the option of trading in your current car, Grange Jaguar have some excellent Jaguars to choose from.
Here is a particularly nice example of a Mark 2 Jaguar which is currently for sale - SEE FULL DETAILS |
