Norman Dewis Collection Sells Well at Auction
Ian Cooling reports that the collection of Norman Dewis performed unexpectedly well in his Spring auction last month.
Bids were received from a wide range of people across the world. Many were people who had worked with Norman or met him as he travelled the world in his retirement role as a Jaguar brand ambassador. All this respect and affection undoubtedly fed into the bids that came through, sending some of them two or even three times over top estimate.
Especially popular were lots related to Norman’s professional career – his race suits from the 1950s, his helmets and goggles all sold high. Another poplar group were lots featuring the cars that Norman is indelibly connected with – XK120, C-type, D-type and, of course, the XJ13 – now known as “Norman’s Car” after his death-defying crash while testing at MIRA in 1971.
The accompanying photos aim to capture the huge variety of lots in the auction. Most are from Norman’s collection, but there are also highlights from other parts of the auction too. Prices shown are hammer prices net of commission and a set of preliminary results is also attached.
The on-line catalogue will remain on Ian’s website as a reference document and it will stay live. The results are incorporated into that catalogue and as queries on the provisional results are resolved, ambiguities clarified, under-estimate bids discussed with sellers and so on, the on-line catalogue will be up-dated.
That catalogue is on Ian’s website at this link – www.jaguarautomobilia.com/auction/
If you have any queries on the auction, or Jaguar automobilia more widely, you can also mail Ian from the website.
On now with the photographs!
